Fido has reason to celebrate its Northern roots this month when the region’s coolest export meets one of its most epic venues for the ten-day Un-Rest festival at Victoria Baths. The phenomenon of Northern Soul will take the spotlight with an explosive line-up of video installations, dance and live art performances, starting 24th April and reaching its crescendo over the May bank holiday weekend.
Look out for…
The Last Builder by Humberto Vélez – the latest film installation from the rising Panamanian star. Catch it each day at Un-Rest before it heads to Tate Modern later this year.
Drawn to the Beat (Saturday 26th April) with artist Naomi Kendrick – a giant participative drawing to music performance where a huge paper scroll will fill the gala pool.
Recorded Soul All-Nighter (Saturday 3rd May) – Taking place from 8pm to 8am, Northern Soul lovers can literally dance the night away to the tune of soul groups and Motown bands.
Morris V Soul May Day Dance-off (Sunday 4th May) – Northern Soul dancers take on Border Morris dancers in a ferocious battle DJ’d by special guest, Wayne Hemingway.
Un-Rest has already caught the attention of Northern Soul enthusiast and BBC 6Music presenter, Stuart Maconie, and has been billed as one not to miss in The Sunday Times ‘Taking Off’ pages. The grandeur of Victoria Baths with its vast Edwardian pools, spectacular stained glass and mosaic tiling will make an inspiring backdrop for this somewhat mad and certainly wonderful festival, funded by Arts Council England.
