Fido’s Family Formula Fantastique!

As the Easter holiday approaches and those of us with families look forward to a week or so of unbridled joy at destinations various, we’ve collated our very own top five greatest UK family experiences EVER:

Go higher and higher on a swingTypes & CharactersZip Wire

1. Hold-your-breath adventures

Adventure Playground 2Mud, crazy rotating rides, a stream to cross in a dozen inventive ways involving wonky bridges and rope swings, we found all at Crocky Trail in Cheshire.

And we’ve taken a trip down the Amazon (well in our mind’s eye) as we’ve navigated Slimbridge’s canoe safari before an expedition to Welly Boot Land – all waiting to be discovered at the Wetland Centre near Bristol.

2. Engineered fun

Eureka in Halifax, Science Museum in London, Enginuity at Ironbridge and Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry are the gentle giants of the museum and gallery sector and by stealth they both entertain and educate.

3. Magical mystery

Nature trails, landscapes with rocks, boulders, trees, streams, waterfalls and intriguing pathways, tick; add a sprinkling of stories of magic and fairies, gorges, follies caves and giant sculpture gets you an A*.  Spell-binding places we’ve been to include the Yorkshire Sculpture Trail, Darley Dale in Derbyshire, Fairy Glen in Betws-y-Coed, Hawkstone Park Follies in Shropshire, Parc Glynllifon in Snowdonia and Kinder Scout in Derbyshire.

4. Trouser-rollingIMG_1251

We’ve left footprints at Robin Hoods Bay, Bridlington (go north for wild and south for manicured), Formby in Lancashire, Fistral Beach in Cornwall, Llanddwyn (AKA Newborough), Anglesey and Bamburgh Castle Beach.  Windy, wet and wild can’t be beat.

5. A great big posh house

Our best ever days out have taken place at a country pile (although not inside said house), thanks to the landowners of yester-yore, there’s masses of outdoor space; plus usually comes with a modern day café, even the gardens offer lots of formal features to hide in, roll down and explore – but save the best until last – we only count those that have the greatest adventure playgrounds: Castle Howard in Yorkshire, Tatton Park in Cheshire, Chatworth House in Derbyshire and Weston Park in Shropshire (forgive the Northern bias here, please get in touch if you have any other recommendations).

Have a fun Easter x
